Things Said - 8 yrs, 6 months

The boy is fond of saying:

"Lets...go......!!!"  (Sounds like, "Lesssss Goooooo")

"That's what you get." (Not nice, but somehow funny each time)

Things, 7 yrs, 7 months - first soccer game, and a little more

7 year, 7 months birthday was yesterday, but who's counting (remember when we counted by months? ha!)

Kid is in soccer now, and I'm the coach. He had his first game on Saturday.

8/21/21 - First soccer game

Score 3-3

The Kid scored 2 goals!

We were down 0-3 at halftime, but then the boy turned it on the second half and led us to a tie!

After he scored the first goal, he ran back and gave me a high five - and a parent snapped a photo of it. It's perhaps, the best photo I've ever seen in my life - the kid is so happy.

You can't see my face in the photo, but if you could, you'd see that I too, was happy, but mostly, relived, that at least we would not get shut out.

AND LATER

The other day at baseball clinic he was hitting well and told the guys running the clinic - "It feels good when you hit it."

That's true, and something we don't often express, but really, that about sums up most sports. Feels good when you hit something or kick something, or throw something in a basket. Seroiusly.

Things - 7 years, 3 months

A few notable things about the boy:

-Likes to say: "Heyyyyyyyyyyyyy" when he knows I'm sarcastic or joking.

-For his 1st grade (Zoom) class, wrote a list of reasons a story wasn't real. Included: "Because popcorn blizzards are not a thing."

-Listed his favorite things as:

1. Video Games

2. Mom and Dad

Upon spotting Grandma in the room, adds...

3. Family

4. Watermelon

Later says, "Mom and Dad and family should probably be at the top of that list. But do you know what my favorite thing to do is?"

Me: Play video games?

Him: No. Eat watermelon.

First School Board Meeting

 March 25th, 2021

Spoke in front (via Zoom) of the school board for the first time, to urge the schools to reopen. Turns out, all the school districts around us are reopening.

Boy and wife watched.

Boy whispered to wife as I was speaking: "When he's done, lets clap for him."

And they did.

Coronavirus - 5 months in

We used to be worried about toilet paper. Now we're just wondering what the new normal is going to be.

It takes a while to establish norms, and I think that's the period we're entering. There's talk that this virus isn't going to go away - there was that talk at the beginning, which seems absurd - and that's starting to sound like the most likely scenario. So, we're going to have to create some new norms, for social interactions, for shopping, for employment, for exercise, for a lot of things.

Right now, there's so much up in the air. 160,000+ deaths, and I was thinking that 60K would be a catastrophic event. Ha. Now we're not even thinking about the numbers, we're just thinking yeah, a lot of people are dying, but it's not us or people we know, but let's not say that too loudly because the next thing you know it will be us and the people we know and I have a sore throat tonight, and I'm serious.

Milestones - 6 years, six months

I mean, we don't really count in months anymore. The kid is 6...and change.

Milestones

Today

-Made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich by himself, without telling anyone he was going to do it

This year

-Goes poo by himself - wipes and everything, though were not sure how well.

-Plays The Entertainer on Piano

-Learns borrowing (Subtraction)

-Learns a lot of Chinese due to his immersion class, but now that that's over because of the virus, who knows how much he'll learn...

And he swims underwater now, though he doesn't swim as well as when he had regular lessons at the YMCA...and will the YMCA ever have lessons again?  Who knows.

Kid Sayings - gas stations

Today (July 10, 2020 - Kid is 6 years, 5 months old)

Just went to a gas station. He stayed in the car. Really didn't think it was much, but it did delay our 10 minute drive to his grandparents' house.

I hop back in the car. Start to drive.

Me: See. That was fast. Fast gas.
Kid: I hate gas stations.
Me: Ahh. Ha. That's a little dramatic.
Kid: Gas stations make your life longer.
Me: Ha.
Kid: All I want for my birthday is a Nintendo Switch, and to never have to go to gas stations again.
Me: Alright, alright, I get it...
